62-year old Huang Rulun is China’s most generous philanthropist, donating US$92 million last year, taking his donations to US$550 million over the past decade. It is fitting that Huang retakes this title, since he was China’s most generous philanthropist back in the inaugural 2004 Hurun Philanthropy List. Huang has made the Top Five every year since records began.

Much of Huang’s donations went toward education, mainly for the construction of schools and made a sizeable contribution to Fujian Science and Technology Museum. Huang Rulun has a personal fortune of US$2.4bn, ranking him at 46th on theHurun Rich List 2012.

In second place this year is Yang Xiu, 52, who gave US$63 million to his alma mater in Nanjing.  It is Yang’s fourth time on the Hurun Philanthropy List in the past decade.

Xu Jiayincame in third with donations of US$62 million, the bulk of which was pledged in June last year during Guangdong province’s Poverty Alleviation Day. Xu has made the list nine of the last ten years, donating over US$200 million in that period. Xu was 9th on theHurun China Rich List 2012with wealth of US5.5bn.

Last year’s most generous donor Cao Dewang donated a further US$7.9 million to take his total donations to US$800 million over the past decade. In 2011, Cao donated 300 million shares of his listed company Fuyao Glass, with a then market value of US$563 million, to his private ‘Heren Foundation’, named after his father. Cao has a personal fortune of US$1 billion, putting him 206thon the Hurun Rich List 2012.

5 of the Top Ten are in the real estate industry, down from 8 last year.

Hurun Report Chairman and Chief Researcher Rupert Hoogewerf said, “Donations are down for the second year running, as Chinese entrepreneurs figure out ways to make their donations more effective. The leadership these individuals bring to China’s nonprofit sector far outweighs the value of their donations.”
