Bill Gates To Help Launch Philanthropic Education Program In China

Bill Gates will help start a new program at Beijing Normal University focused on philanthropic education. Gates and the school agreed to the effort in June, and will work to raise $16.1 million a year from the well-off in the U.S. and China.

The program will focus on classroom teaching and overseas study tours looking at philanthropy for newly wealthy Chinese. It will also involve employees in philanthropic and social organizations, potential donors and training specialists, according to Wang Zhenyao, dean of Beijing Normal University’s China Philanthropic Research Institute.

“China still lacks professional consultancies and training to help potential philanthropists,” Wang said.

Cheng Gang, president of the China Foundation Center, welcomed the initiative, saying, “Many Chinese entrepreneurs are enthusiastic about becoming philanthropists.”

Zhao Hua, who teaches courses at the Peter F. Drucker Academy in Beijing on managing philanthropic organizations, said many wealthy people in China feel it is unnecessary for them to receive education about charitable work.

However, wealthy Chinese should realize that real philanthropy is about solving social problems, which requires vision, sound management skills and an innovative approach, she said.
